Mae West

Movie stars like Mae West were breaking new ground with her racy films that became a hit during the 1930s.
In her films West thrilled her audiences with a new and innovative way of looking at women.
Although her sexual innuendoes, sly remarks, and comments with double connotations were popular among many,
they were often viewed negatively.

There were often times disagreements about the interpretations of her films.
Some interpreted her movies as “sexually liberating” while others interpreted it as “sexually degenerate.”
However, despite the often-controversial interpretations of West’s films, they all had one thing in common;
they pushed the envelope of acceptable behavior and reinforced the changing culture of the 1920s and the 1930s.
