Mae West's Effects on the 1920's


There were many changes taking place in the 1930's
most of these changes can be seen in West's films.
Since such change was taking place in the 1930s, it is interesting to see the way that
films change due to the changing culture. In West’s films, one can see the changes of the
1930s materialize before one’s eyes. West’s films did not depict the changes that were
taking place exactly, but instead they modeled the changes that were taking place and took
them to a new level. The roles of women in the 1930s was changing.
It was clear though that changes were
occurring and that they could be reflected in the films of West and of many other stars of
the time. Some of the comparisons that can be drawn from West’s movies and society are
things such as smoking, and drinking, makeup, and dress, sexual dancing and her sexual
talking are all very typical of what is happening in the 1930s.
